Google My Maps is a free web mapping application, it allows you illustrate and communicate information by displaying it on a map.

In this hands-on workshop you’ll learn how to visualise data, including using spreadsheets which have a location column, on a map.You can use Google My Maps to show sites such as trees, buildings, locations of companies, attractions, historical events, places mentioned in literature, earthquakes, traffic accidents, routes between places, habitats, zones of interest, etc.

Google My Maps is ideal for those who wish to embed their map on a website or blog as you can zoom in and around the map, click on symbols you have added to read pop up text, add photos or images or YouTube clips. The workshop will include adding symbols / lines / shapes to represent your data and display it on a map. Adding labels, photos and videos to your map.


Objectives By the end of the session you will:

  • Have learned how to create, customise and share a map
  • Know how to import data from a spreadsheet and visualise it on a map
  • Add photos / images to your map
  • Embed the map on a website or print a map or save it as a pdf

No prior experience with Google My Maps is required and no advance preparation for this workshop is necessary.

This course will be of interest to administrators, academic staff and researchers. 


Certificates of attendance will be available on request on the day of the workshop.
