Sharing Your Digital Projects and Data In-Person

Sharing Your Digital Projects and Data: Encouraging reuse, collaboration and research impact using content management systems and digital collections management systems

No booking required: places are limited to 35 and available on a first come, first served basis

Overview

Tool Focus: Omeka, Wordpress, Mukurtu and Neatline

There are a multitude of ways to share your research data. In the past academic research has been refined, reduced and submitted for consideration and publishing though journals and monographs. However, scholars are increasingly sharing their findings and their raw data through social media or self-published online tools. Alternative means of knowledge exchange are altering the nature of engagement and collaboration between researcher and audience. Although traditional tools remain both popular and requisite, today’s scholars are offered a wider variety of communication avenues; choosing between them or using them in harmony raises new challenges.

This workshop will introduce a number of tools and compare two popular tools in particular. Wordpress is a Content Management System and Omeka a Digital Collection Management System. Both offer rich functionality but approach a similar objective from divergent perspectives.

How can we distinguish between them and decide which is most appropriate to our needs?

Through hands-on instruction in Omeka you will learn how to describe and construct digital objects for sharing and narrative presentation.

No prior experience with these tools is required and no advance preparation for this workshop is necessary.

Shawn Day, the facilitator of this workshop, will be available for the hour following the workshop to provide face-to-face consultation relating to your research data needs.
