Description

In this hands-on workshop you will  learn how to create a map with ArcGIS using data downloaded from organisations such as the National Parks & Wildlife Service and the EPA. 

Step-by-step guidance will be given on importing the data into the ArcGIS software package and using background maps from Ordnance Survey Ireland's MapGenie service.  Within the ArcMap module of ArcGIS participants will create a thematic map customising it with labels, shading schemes, legends, north arrows, captions and scale bars. 

This course is designed for those with little or no GIS experience and who don’t necessarily have access to a UCD course with a GIS module. It is intended to introduce participants to the basics of GIS and how people use it to visualise and interpret geospatial data.

Objectives

By the end of the session you will be able to: 

• Create a map by adding geospatial data to ArcMap 
• Create your own points to add to ArcMap
• Change the appearance of data layers
• Create queries using Attribute Tables
• Prepare and export maps for inclusion in reports or theses in pdf or jpeg format
